Week 1

 ¡Bienvenido a la Republica Dominicana!

Welcome

Dios, Patria, Libertad

(God, Homeland, Freedom)

The Dominican Republic (DR) is a predominantly Spanish speaking country located on the island of Hispaniola, alongside Haiti with an estimated population of 10,622,000.  Its surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean in the north and Caribbean Sea to the south. The capital of the DR is Santo Domingo, located on the south coast. Its known for exports in bananas, coffee and tobacco and so much more, as well as being a beautiful tourist destination due to the moderate tropical climate, mountainous landscape and beaches.

As we continue to learn more about the Dominican Republic and its geography, it will be important to identify the differences between natural hazards, disasters and catastrophes.
A natural hazard is a natural process such as earthquakes that have a threat on people and property.
A natural disaster is a natural hazard that occurs at a specific place in a limited time span. To be considered a natural disaster, any of these characteristics will have occurred- at least 10 fatalities, at least 100 impacted, declared state of emergency, or requested international assistance.
A natural catastrophe is similar to a disaster but with far greater magnitude, such that there is a lot of money required for relief and rebuild as well as many years for recovery.
