 ¡Bienvenido a la Republica Dominicana! Welcome Dios, Patria, Libertad (God, Homeland, Freedom) The Dominican Republic (DR) is a predominantly Spanish speaking country located on the island of Hispaniola, alongside Haiti with an estimated population of 10,622,000.  Its surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean in the north and Caribbean Sea to the south. The capital of the DR is Santo Domingo, located on the south coast. Its known for exports in bananas, coffee and tobacco and so much more, as well as being a beautiful tourist destination due to the moderate tropical climate, mountainous landscape and beaches.  As we continue to learn more about the Dominican Republic and its geography, it will be important to identify the differences between natural hazards, disasters and catastrophes. A natural hazard is a natural process such as earthquakes that have a threat on people and property.  A natural disaster is a natural hazard that occurs at a specific place in a limited time span.
